Rappin Ass Thursdays #17

Tracks up this week from Dizzee Rascal, Consequence f. Rick Ross, E-40 f. Young Jeezy & B-Legit, Busy Signal, and BP. Go go go!

Dizzee Rascal “Chillin Wiv Da Man Dem” [mp3]
LOVE this one, ever since it popped up in Diz’ Nike x Ben Drury video. Super smooth ode to bros. Who knew London had a west coast?

Consequence f Rick Ross “The More I Get” [mp3]
More laid back vibes, courtesy of Statik Selektah looping up some choice Teddy P. It’s kind of crazy how Rick Ross – the same man behind the couplet “now im in the suites/ and I’m eatin crab meats” and a golden medallion of his own face – sounds so good doing these (relatively) reflective, back in the day “before I was a bawse…” kind of verses. Fucking with girls from Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University on “Here I Am,” shouting out dead, unsigned FL rappers on the underrated “Pots And Pans” off his debut album… to all the Officer Rawse detractors, rather than complain about the acting, give it up to the man for setting a scene.

E-40 f. Young Jeezy & B-Legit “Get Money” [mp3]
Fonzarelli traded some of the most distinctive production of this decade for some generic Runners kinda beat (seriously where’s Khaled on this?) and a really irritating hook, but Jeezy’s Bay pandering (Pac and Mac Dre shout-outs, “Blow The Whistle” interpolations – “What’s my favorite word? Bricks!”) is supremely enjoyable. Plus: a new E-40 record is on the way!

Busy Signal “Black Belt” [mp3]
I don’t even need to talk about why this rules so hard, Eddie Stats already did it for me.

BP “Club Hoppin” [mp3]
DJ Speedy has a knack for these ominous, three chord beaters. His “Light Show” for Gucci and Yo Gotti has been a favorite for months, and “Club Hoppin” follows that path, with some added off-key singing on the hook. Does he know me or what?
