New Honor Roll Jams

Posted on Aug 2nd, 2010

Yee! Last week in Cali you may have seen the FG fam representing with Trackademicks at Audiotistic (he jumped onstage to perform “Enjoy What You Do” at the peak of Nick Catchdubs’ set) and The Do-Over. He’s been working on a lot of new music we’re excited to share with y’all very soon, but meanwhile here’s his latest remix, for Bay bros League510’s “To The Beat”

If that’s not enough HNRL for ya, grab DJ Tap.10’s new Made In SF mix for Made Jewelry. Says Tap, it’s a “collection of recent joints I’ve been feeling, including some Champagne Soul, Tender Knock, HNRL joints and some classic, lesser known Frisco anthems.” Here’s a handy zip file.

The Fool Over

The Do-Over is one of the best parties in the world, an LA oasis that pops off every Sunday afternoon powered by (unannounced) guest sets from the worlds finest selectors week in and week out. FG fam have been among those DJs in the past, so it was only natural that since a bunch of us were out in LA for the weekend post-Audiotistic, we would come back to rock again for The Fool Over!

Hit the Do-Over blog to grab sets recorded last Sunday from A-Trak, Nick Catchdubs, Craze and (surprise!) Juan MacLean, who set it off while eating a burger.

Rappin Ass Thursdays #41

Posted on Jul 29th, 2010

Sometimes I feel bad about skipping (several) Thursdays on this column, but I’ve come to realize that I never meant to write this up religiously every week, for the same reason that I don’t write about every brand new record or leak already cluttering up blogland. This isn’t Julia & Julia with curse words, I’m gonna write about some stuff I feel like talmbout when I feel like talmboutit, not a dutiful batch of pithy remarks and Sendspaces you can set your watch to. So, without further ado… links and stuff after the jump! Read More

Telephoned Keep Their Heads Ringin Mixtape + Chromeo Tour!

Posted on Jul 28th, 2010

Fool’s Gold’s dynamic duo Telephoned have put together a joyful new mixtape, Keep Their Heads Ringin, just in time for their opening slot on Chromeo’s US tour (which kicked off this week with killer shows in DC and Philly and funks across North America for the rest of the summer).

Keep… gives listeners a perfect taste of the new sounds Maggie and producer Sammy Bananas have woven into their repertoire of party starting not-quite-cover songs. But don’t take our word for it, check what The FADER had to say when they premiered the tape this AM:

“As far as cover bands go, Telephoned’s probably not the one your cousin Lupo from Long Island’s gonna call to play his wedding. Taking their concept from the old game of telephone, the duo of Maggie Horn and Sammy Bananas translate popular music through their various personal filters for an off-the-wall end version of the initial song, drawing on influences which seem to include: NYC nightlife, Hot 97, general fun times, 1990s club music, sequins and neon x-rays. Their second mixtape sticks mostly to the top 40 R&B/rap bent of their first, twisting tracks everybody knows through their high-nightlife techno vision (though Chelley’s “Took the Night” and Teki Latex’s “Dinosaurs With Guns” both get the Telephoned treatment). A version of Donnis’ “Gone” is turned into a kind of screwed down, emo-club Dem Bow, while Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” and Jay-Z’s “On to the Next One” are warped into clamoring, post-Swizz pop art, with Bananas blessedly dipping his foot in the long lost genre of drill n bass.”

Download the mixtape here, and hit the release party in NYC tonight at Ella! Chromeo tourdates after the jump.

Kid Sister x Nina Sky x Nadastrom on Jersey Shore Soundtrack

Posted on Jul 21st, 2010

Check out the newly released Jersey Shore soundtrack album for Kid Sister’s “Lookout Weekend,” a cover of Debbie Deb’s freestyle classic produced by Nadastrom and guest-starring Nina Sky. The album also contains fist pumpers from our friends Diplo, Afrojack, Steve Aoki, and… well it’s hard to concentrate when it takes soooo much self control not to flip this with Kid Sis, the Nadastroms and the NS twins into the most epic Photoshop face swap of all time. Dream big!

Bonus beat: check Nadastrom’s new Mixpak podcast for more Fool’s Gold action, including a clever Congorock edit and a preview of Dave Nada’s forthcoming LA Riots remix.
