Eli Escobar Live @ Shop

Posted on Sep 22nd, 2011

If you came by the Fool’s Gold booth at W+K’s “Shop” mega pop-up event earlier this summer, you would have caught an afternoon of tunes from our friends and fam, including NYC’s own Eli Escobar. It turns out that Eli recorded his set (“nice and mellow, a different sort of set than I might play live”) and posted it up on SoundCloud for everyone to enjoy.

We told you about SHOP, the pop-up retail jam to end all pop-up retail jams, put together by our buddy Phil Chang and the Wieden+Kennedy crew. But hey, if our word isn’t enough, see what the NY Times, AdWeek, Thrillist and PSFK had to say about the free event, which previewed last night and continues until Monday on the 6th Floor of 150 Varick Street (between Spring and Vandam).

Along with goods from the likes of Steven Allan, Brooklyn Tailors, Rogan, A-Morir and other fabulous brands, there’s a table of new and exclusive FG merch right next to the DJ booth, which – lo and behold! – we stocked with friends all weekend long. Peep the schedule above for who will be playing on each day. Come through, say hey, and buy something…

Switchboard

Posted on Feb 7th, 2011

Sammy Bananas and Maggie Horn of Telephoned have made a name for themselves with unique, not-quite-cover songs and ecstatic live performances. They’ll put both those elements on display tomorrow night (2/8) for the debut edition of Switchboard, their new party at the Ace Hotel in NYC in conjunction with the good peoples of Good Peoples.

It’s a “night of musical transposition,” featuring thematically-appropriate sets from Sammy, Nick Catchdubs and Eli Escobar, along with live performances from Telephoned and special guest Shyvonne (who’ve you heard as the voice of “Mind Reader” and more). Don’t miss out! It’s free with RSVP and pops off at 11pm, we’ll see you there. Read More

Posted on Jan 14th, 2011

The latest Foolcast comes from New York City’s own Eli Escobar in the form of “Find A Friend.” This hour-long mix is a collection of unreleased disco edits from Eli’s personal, handmade stash. Says Eli: “I’m gonna leave off a tracklist only cause I like people to not know what’s coming next, I feel like it makes it more fun for the listener…” Dig in and dance, people!

Subscribe to the Foolcast via iTunes or your favorite RSS reader at the main Foolcast page, where you can also download the download the mix directly (right click and save-as).

For more from Eli, check his latest single “Love Thing” on Plant, as well as his still-jacking remix for Nacho Lovers’ FG debut, “Acid Life.” And if you’re in NYC, go celebrate Eli’s (and Blu Jemz’) birthdays at Submercer this Sunday (1/16).

Cosmo's Crates: Born This Way

Posted on Jan 11th, 2011

Cosmo Baker is back with more insight from his wax stacks. Read on and be sure to check his other columns.

What’s good, Fool’s Gold massive? Your favorite record nerd is back again to drop some gems on you, and when I say “gems” I really mean useless shit from the treasure trove that is La Cabeza De Cosmo. Now it’s fucking crazy to me that, here in the 21st Century, there still isn’t equal rights for the LGBT community in America. I cannot wrap my head around the fact that 2 people who love each other and devote their lives to one another, that are gay, do not share the same rights as those who are straight. One day, people will look back at this time and just be ashamed of themselves. Another thing that drives me absolutely batshit crazy are those people in the DJ and dance music community who are completely (consciously or not) homophobic. Don’t you know, if it weren’t for the gay community, none of this shit would even be here in the way it is? But that all might be another discussion for another time, and my time is so very precious, so let me get right to the music this week with “I Was Born This Way.” Read More
