The soundtrack for RZA’s directorial debut The Man With The Iron Fists is an appropriately star-studded affair, featuring a gang of rap icons including our own Danny Brown, who closes out the epic “Tick, Tock” as only he can. Sorry I skipped two weeks y’all. But in that time, no shockers. Kanye, Ross and Jeezy still the hardest shit out (honorable mention to Vado: slime, it’s your time!), Drake album has its moments inbetween interminable amounts of r&b self-loathing, Eminem “comeback” LP 100% unlistenable – and I’m not trying to hear it about the production credits, I love Just and Khalil’s shit too but even the better tracks could have been Game album cuts if Jayceon was all AY CUZ AY MAKE THIS LIKE METALLICA UNFORGIVEN WITH TOO MUCH ORGAN AND WE WILL ROCK YOU DRUMS but thats a rant for another time. And ultimately a moot point, good beat + bad songwriting = bad music no matter how you attempt to justify otherwise. EXHALE. But why focus on the big dogs, here’s some joints you may have missed. Before I get to brand new music in this young decade, gotta cleanse the palate of some late, late 2009 favorites in steady rotation over the break thanks to the “All Mix Holiday Weekend” on Hot 97 (which let DJs like Enuff, Camilo, et al dictate their own shows for the most part).
Without fail, the standout sets were always club excursions, ALWAYS with a Jersey shout out, mixing “Percolator” with new tunes like DJ Frosty’s “Ride That Wave” – maybe more on that in another post… – and these midtempo, East Coast rap-n-b breaks, featuring all the tunes after the jump (along with the occasional Jay Elec-yarmulke “Exhibit C”). Following in the footsteps of Pitbull, Travis & AM, and Joseph Guillermo Jones, Joell Ortiz and Collie Buddz have recorded their own versions of Kid Cudi’s “Day ‘N’ Nite.” Collie even has two takes, one solo and one with Chip Fu (what up doc?)
