Eli Escobar Live @ Shop

Posted on Sep 22nd, 2011

If you came by the Fool’s Gold booth at W+K’s “Shop” mega pop-up event earlier this summer, you would have caught an afternoon of tunes from our friends and fam, including NYC’s own Eli Escobar. It turns out that Eli recorded his set (“nice and mellow, a different sort of set than I might play live”) and posted it up on SoundCloud for everyone to enjoy.

Cubic Zirconia "Follow Your Heart" Out Today + Hudson Mohawke Megamix

Posted on Sep 20th, 2011

If you caught Cubic Zirconia live at our Day Off party, you already know that they don’t look or sound like any other band out there. Their amped-up energy and slinky, synthy funk is not to be denied… so of course, we’re proud to drop their debut full-length Follow Your Heart on iTunes today! (The physical release date isn’t until November 29th, but we didn’t want to keep you waiting any longer.)

If you still need some convincing, check out this megamix of FYH tracks put together by the one and only Hudson Mohawke. And peep the video for “Take Me High” (directed by CZ’s own Tiombe Lockhart) after the jump.

Remembering DJ Mehdi

Posted on Sep 19th, 2011

From Dave1′s Facebook post…

I wrote this text on the plane back from Paris a couple of days ago. I first intended it to be a series of personal notes: an attempt to retrace the chronology of our friendship with Mehdi. Then I figured I’d share it. It’s long and perhaps too full of factoids. But that’s how Mehdi, ever the raconteur, like his stories: starting “ab ovo” (from the very beginning, the origins) and rife with trivia. So here it is, my own personal Mehdipedia entry… Read More

Be sure to grab Sammy’s new Telephoned mixtape while you’re at it, and stay tuned for his debut release with Thee Mike B as disco house duo Fifteenth.

As the profane gospel of Danny Brown spreads around the globe, more and more good reviews and pieces keep coming in. (You know we like to recap these!) Check out this great feature from the new issue of Spin (“half battle-scarred street rapper, half Station to Station-era David Bowie”) as well as their Day Off-centric blog post (“Danny Brown’s a guy worth rooting for”), and then see what Fact Magazine had to say about XXX (“completely honest, unrestrained and unmannered…essential listening”). And if you haven’t downloaded the album already to judge for yourself…what are you waiting for?

For more Danny, check his guest appearance on the Das Racist album (out now on iTunes – check them on tour this month) and a massive posse cut remix of Mr Muthafuckin Exquire’s “Huzzah!” that’s a secret track on Exo’s new Lost In Translation release with Mishka.

Posted on Sep 13th, 2011

Last week we threw our second annual DAY OFF party in New York City, joined by a few thousand of our friends. Tons of good folks were there to capture the party: Complex put together the official recap video above, and we’ve also got more footage after the jump along with some photo favorites. Be sure to check the full galleries and coverage from Mel D Cole (one, two, three), KirillWasHere, Brook Bobbins (one, two), Stereogum, LTD, Bongo Boy, HiFi Cartel, 24 Hr Party People (party + afterparty), Jungle Gym, TechieNYC (one, two, three, four), Podgeopedia, Shea Whitey, Brock Fetch (scroll down), Billboard, Miss Info, CMJ, Paper Magazine, Mister Mort with the fashion favorites and Village Voice with the play-by-play (TMZ even got in on the action with Chromeo).
