R.I.P. Grandmaster Roc Raida

Posted on Sep 23rd, 2009

Raida and me

I can’t believe I’m writing another eulogy for a close friend and icon just a few short weeks after AM’s untimely passing. I apologize for taking a few days to write but quite simply, I had to muster up the strength again. The pain and sorrow that I have felt in the last few days are unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in my life. But I do it out of duty, because I owe so much to Raida and it’s so important for me to honor his legacy, so here goes…

At the very core of me, before all else, before the party rocking, before the producing and remixing, before the record labels, before Kanye, I am a battle DJ; a very ambitious one who strived to be the absolute best. When you’re this passionate about your craft, when it feels like your true calling in life, you have icons in whose footsteps you want to follow. Any battle DJ will tell you about the countless hours that they spent on a daily basis studying videotapes of the champs. When I was 13, 14, 15, that was Roc Raida to me. He was the 1995 DMC World Champion and I won in 97, so he was my direct source of inspiration. I remember the feeling that I got as a kid watching his videos: he had so much attitude and confidence. He was so fast. To this young Jewish whippersnapper from Canada, he was such an embodiment of New York and hip hop! Roc Raida just seemed untouchable. Read More

This Thursday. DJ Quik and Trackademicks.

Posted on Jun 8th, 2009

Flyer

Anyone that truly knows my musical inclinations knows that DJ Quik is in my Top 5 of artists of all time. So the fact that I am on the same bill with him has me JUICED.

The one thing that I can say about him is that he has always been ahead of the curve, able to do what others in his genre could never think of doing. Back in middle school I remember watching PBS right before Reading Rainbow was about to come on, when all of a sudden “Quik’s Groove III” came on as the soundbed for the station ID!

Working with musicians like El Debarge and Raphael Saadiq, as well as a high level of live instrumentation, have only helped solidify him as a pioneer of sophisticated grown-folks gangsta rap music. Did I mention Suga Free?

If you’re in NORTHERN CALIFORNIA and you ain’t at Ruby Skye in SF this Thursday, that’s when you’re lost… In Life.

Trackademicks with the Pharcyde at the Fillmore Tonight!

Posted on May 23rd, 2009

It’s going down tonight at the legendary Fillmore in SF!

I’m excited because I get the opportunity to rock with the Pharcyde – all four of them!

Its crazy because this group has achieved what many groups only aspire to… crafting a hip-hop “standard”. For real though, this song is on “Happy Birthday” status (and I’m not talking about the Birfday Song…).

An with that said, here’s one of my Pharcyde favorites… “She Said” (Jay Dee Remix)

See yall tonight!

Jokers Of The Scene Remix Rob Threezy

Posted on May 20th, 2009

Head over to TheFADER.com to download this excellent JOTS remix of Rob Threezy’s new single “The Change Up,” out now on Nightshifters. “They flip its essence into a deep and gothy dance song,” says the FADER-ers, right underneath a picture of Chris and Linus as gingerbread cookies. Stay tuned for more JOTS vs Rob3 action on the forthcoming “Baggy Bottom Boys” remix digi-EP on Fool’s Gold…

The Jokers are on tour in Europe through the rest of the month and all of June, so be sure to check them in your neighborhood. Next up is a giant Mixmag party at Egg in London on Saturday 5/23. They also answered a particularly cheeky (even by JOTS standards) Q&A for the party, which you can read here.

Jokers Of The Scene x Actual Pain Mix

Posted on Apr 20th, 2009

We were baking out in the desert all weekend with JOTS, so it’s more than appropriate to keep the party going with their death valley of a mix for Actual Pain, Since Our Last Report Many Things Have Changed. Featuring a bunch of new exclusives, industrial throwbacks, and pitch-black tech house, it’s a moody excursion from the boys that you MUST get real weird to! Download here and check the tracklist after the jump. Read More

Things you might not know about Sammy Bananas: he has a rather large collection of 90s independent rap vinyl (L Da Head Toucha!) and composes for jazz flute. Things you already know (and love) about Sammy Bananas: he is one damn clever DJ!

The young lad is headed down to Australia for a few shows next month and put together an enjoyably funky new tour mix that leans heavy on tracks from the red continent. Listen close for the surprises!
