Farewell Fat Beats

Posted on Sep 10th, 2010

After 16 years of being the mecca of underground hip hop, Fat Beats closed its last remaining stores in New York and LA. I have a lot of history with the company, since my first record label Audio Research was distributed through them. So it was an honor to be invited to perform on the last day of a week of in-stores, last Saturday, alongside many greats like DJ Premier, Just Blaze and DJ Scratch. I did a full set of routines, I think it was about 17 minutes long! That’s like 3 DMCs, yo. Peter Rosenberg captured some highlights, peep the video… and Fat Beats, I tip my fedora to thee.

Make Something!! Workshop

Posted on Aug 11th, 2010

Last week I did a workshop in New York for the Make Something!! School in association with Nike. They’ve been getting people like Todd James, Carri Munden from Cassette Playa, Todd Selby and more to come in and work with teenagers from the City. They’re all preparing a big blowout ceremony that will be taking place next weekend at the World Basketball Festival. In my case, I was asked to help the kids come up with a 1 minute musical performance.

Check the video from Nike above, and more info on the Make Something!! blog. Trizzy luh the kids.

The Fool Over

Posted on Jul 30th, 2010

The Do-Over is one of the best parties in the world, an LA oasis that pops off every Sunday afternoon powered by (unannounced) guest sets from the worlds finest selectors week in and week out. FG fam have been among those DJs in the past, so it was only natural that since a bunch of us were out in LA for the weekend post-Audiotistic, we would come back to rock again for The Fool Over!

Hit the Do-Over blog to grab sets recorded last Sunday from A-Trak, Nick Catchdubs, Craze and (surprise!) Juan MacLean, who set it off while eating a burger.

Stones Throw x Fool's Gold Discotheque

Posted on Jul 26th, 2010

This year during Coachella, we got together with our friends from Stones Throw for one fine evening of “disco, boogie and house music” (as the hand-drawn flyer advertised) from Peanut Butter Wolf, The Brothers Macklovitch (A-Trak and Dave1), Mayer Hawthorne, Jokers Of The Scene, James Pants, and Chris Bag Raiders. Aloe Blacc was on mic duties throughout the evening, and, as you can see from the video highlight reel, a groovy time was had by all!

The night went so well, in fact, that we decided to base a whole tour around it: the Stones Throw x Fool’s Gold Discotheque, featuring Peanut Butter Wolf, A-Trak, J Rocc and Nacho Lovers (alongside DJ sets from some very special guests: Treasure Fingers, Holy Ghost!, Mayer Hawthorne and more) kicking off in Chicago with a Lollapalooza afterparty on August 6th and then traveling to San Francisco, Portland, and wrapping up with a very special boat party in Vancouver. Check the lineups and details after the jump! Read More

What The Duck

Posted on Jul 9th, 2010

If you missed the festival debut of Duck Sauce (featuring A-Trak, Armand Van Helden, and…an enormous inflatable duck) at EDC, fret not: Trizzy has you covered with this great video recap and pics from the night, along with some shots from his Travis x A-Trak performance at the same fest.

For more DS action, you can finally grab their perennial summer jam “aNYway” in North America:

iTunes USA / iTunes Canada / Amazon / Beatport

Their vinyl-only Greatest Hits EP is out now as well. Along with the rubber ducks! More on the way…

New Chromeo Single: "Don't Turn The Lights On"

Posted on Jun 29th, 2010

Chromeo – Don’t Turn The Lights On from bang on on Vimeo.

I have an older brother, his name is David and he has a band called Chromeo. You know this, right? I just need to make sure once in a while.

(Are you following them on twitter yet? They’re new in town.)

Chromeo have a new album just around the corner, and having witnessed the brick-by-brick assembly of that beast, I can’t wait for the world to hear it. Dave always sings me his songs before he records them. Somewhere on one of my old MiniDV tapes I have footage of him doing “Momma’s Boy” on the air-Wurli and air-bells when it was just in his head… I need to dig that up. But I digress. They recorded the new album at a studio just a few blocks from my apartment, so I’d go visit them every evening and was the go-to “how does this sound?” guy. I even tracked their vocals on one of the songs. But truthfully, the way they work is extremely self-contained. If they do reach out to someone on the outside, it’ll be some random saxophonist, which has happened a few times already.

Now it’s all done, and it is my pleasure to present to you: “Don’t Turn The Lights On”. Buy it on iTunes! (That’s the US link but it’s also out in the UK.)
