The Brothers Macklovitch “I Can Call You (Pal Joey Remix)”

Posted on Nov 12th, 2020

One of a kind New Yawker Pal Joey paved the way for sample-based house music with pioneering late ’80s and early ’90s creations like Soho “Hot Music” and Earth People “Dance,” all while slinging records at Vinylmania in the West Village and producing “Love’s Gonna Get’cha” for Boogie Down Productions. This makes him the perfect OG to enlist for a Fool’s Gold remix, and the beat master doesn’t disappoint, adding his signature loop d’loop touch to The Brothers Macklovitch’s “I Can Call You.” Pal Joey’s doubled up drum breaks (and freestyle vocal interlude!) take A-Trak and Dave 1’s Portrait cover to a dusted dancefloor in an outer borough near you. DJ Spinna has been a legend in the house and hip-hop worlds for decades, and a direct influence to A-Trak and Dave 1 at the start of their music careers with his synth-fused productions for likes of Jigmastas, Mr Complex and the Beyond Real Experience. Spinna flexes his intergalactic muscles on his “Journey Mix” of The Brothers Macklovitch’s “I Can Call You,” twisting A-Trak and Dave 1 of Chromeo’s ‘90s R&B tribute into a jazzy club workout, complete with one truly epic synth solo! The Brothers Macklovitch “I Can Call You”

When A-Trak and Dave 1 of Chromeo teamed up as The Brothers Macklovitch, they set out to channel the sounds of their formative years: countless hours spent digging for records and falling in love with music as funk-hungry Montreal teens. The follow up to their debut single “Give Love To Get Some” (and its Waajeed and Morgan Geist remixes) is “I Can Call You” a cover of a little known 1995 gem by the R&B group Portrait, sped up and jazzed up like it came straight from their parents’ basement: with Dave on vocals Trizzy on the cuts. The Brothers Macklovitch “Give Love To Get Some (Morgan Geist Dub)”

Morgan Geist is a New York / New Jersey dance legend bringing inventive energy to classic disco and electro sounds with his experimental solo LPs, hit duo Storm Queen and the massively influential Metro Area (aka what Resident Advisor calls “some of the most celebrated dance music of the past decade.”) He continues to remake dance music in his own image while stretching The Brothers Macklovitch’s “Give Love To Get Some” into fantastically dubby shapes, stuffed with wonky sax riffs and loop d’loops like none other. The Brothers Macklovitch “Give Love To Get Some (Waajeed Remix)”

Waajeed is a beloved producer carrying the torch for Detroit’s deep musical history and future-minded grooves, whether on countless solo releases or collaborations with the likes of Theo Parrish, J Dilla, Dwele and his own group Platinum Pied Pipers. It was only right that The Brothers Macklovitch (A-Trak and Dave1 of Chromeo) enlist him for a remix of their debut single “Give Love To Get Some,” levitating this feel-good cut into soulful new dimensions. Listen Now!
