Trackademicks Loves Swing Out Sister

Posted on Jun 3rd, 2009

I have to thank my mom for the lovefest about to take place…

As a kid in the 80s, I really only listened to what my mom listened to- Wham!, Sade, Tears For Fears, Basia, and of course Swing Out Sister. These were groups I loved way before I could name a hip-hop group. About as close as it got to hip-hop in my house was Bob James’ “Take Me to the Mardi Gras” or the KING OF R&B’s best album “Don’t Be Cruel”…

Swing Out Sister’s brand of Sophisti-Pop is probably my biggest personal influence. Lush string arrangements, solid topic matter, fresh chords, and intelligent pop sensibility- a lot of the ideals I use to guide my own brand of SOPHISTI-SLAP (yes, term invented by me).

“Twilight World” is my favorite song from them, followed by HELLA others…

I only bring all this up now because I get to see them for the FIRST TIME EVER at Bimbo’s in San Francisco – Tonight!

And I’m taking my mom.
Do I seem excited?
Good.

Here’s a new clip for Malente’s “Music Forever,” which is out now (or out soon? We’re bad with dates) on Southern Fried. Check it out and whet your appetite for Malente’s megajam “I Like It,” dropping this spring on Fool’s Gold with crazy mixes from Riva Starr and Mikix The Cat.

Go-Go "Day 'N' Nite"

Posted on May 8th, 2009

At the Wale show at LPR in New York City last night, Kid Cudi droped by to say what up – so of course, Mr Folarin’s backing band UCB took the opportunity to coat “Day ‘N’ Nite” with tons of mumbo sauce in their impromptu live go-go version.

Dust La Rock Art Show Pics + Video

Posted on Apr 27th, 2009

Last Thursday’s “Best Of The Beast” opening was the place to be, as a couple hundred of our best friends and fam came out for Fool’s Gold art director Dust La Rock’s debut solo show. Queen Majesty, Vin Sol, Nick Catchdubs and Dave1 spun the tunes, Red Stripe and Vitamin Water provided refreshments, Fader debuted their new issue, Worship Worthy made sure everything ran smoothly and a literal who’s who of NYC’s creative community brought infinite good vibes to celebrate one of their own.

Check out these full photo galleries from Ian Meyer, Nicky Digital, Driven By Boredom (who also shot the event for Village Voice, Village Slum (a bunch more on Flickr too), as well as some recaps at Street Level, Hypebeast, RCRD LBL and Herald De Paris. Dust, Trizzy and Catch filmed a MTV News interview which should be up shortly, and in the meantime you can check some video of the show from Bongoboy along with A-Trak’s Flipcam Q&As with Haze and Sammy Bananas (along with some of our photo gallery favorites) after the jump. Fool's Gold WMC Pics + Video

This year’s edition of the Fool’s Gold WMC Spectacular was our second consecutive year tearing down White Room in downtown Miami, and we finally got back all the pics and video documenting the fun-splosion. After a packed weekend of shows, we started the day bum rushing the Stones Throw pool party, killed a giant family dinner at the steakhouse, then hit the clurb. Along with all the FG fam rocking on stage (Sammy Bananas, Nick Catchdubs, Treasure Fingers, Jokers Of The Scene and Nacho Lovers – who took over the whole side room for a night of deeeeeeep house and techno) we played host to special guests Steve Aoki, DJ Mehdi, a rare Annie Mac x Fake Blood tag team, and hometown hero Craze, who ended his set by rocking with A-Trak in an epic impromptu scratch session.

We went the whole night long, staying packed long after the other shows closed down (and gave us second and third winds as the party people trickled in). Check the pics and video after the jump, and Ian Meyer’s full photo gallery here. Also peep A-Trak and Mehdi’s solo blog recaps. Read More
