Muzi – uMUZI (Edd Remixes)

Posted on Mar 8th, 2024

Last October, South African artist Muzi made his Fool’s Gold debut with uMUZI, an autobiographical collection of music with vignettes of the artist’s journey from childhood to fatherhood . In 2024, this project has been reimagined for the club with remixes from Dan Kye, Edd, Emmaculate, and monocolour, a brand new alias from Kyptogram. Multi instrumentalist Jordan Rakei, know by his electronic soul-jazz alias Dan Kye, delivers a remix that even adds his own falsetto vocals to “Queen” — an anthem that already featured Chris Martin (yes, that Chris Martin). Malta’s Edd transforms both “Light” and “Queen” into tasteful tech house bangers. Chicago’s Emmaculate turns fan favorite “Milk & Honey” (feat. The Last Skeptic) into a nighttime Afro house weapon. Kyptogram, who has been making waves with his project kypt. vol2, premieres his new monocolour alias with a huge remix of “Queen” complete with powerful synth lines and live percussions. Listen now.

Muzi – uMUZI

Posted on Oct 13th, 2023

An autobiographical collection detailing Muzi’s universe and how it came to be, uMUZI sees the “Zulu Skywalker” return to Earth, grounded by his memories and the desire to reconnect with his late parents. Where his previous album, INTERBLAKTIC, focused on Muzi’s journey as an artist, uMUZI serves as his origin story, chronicling the moments that have truly made Muzi who he is – from describing his parents’ first date with ‘eMtunzini’ and his first crush with ‘Queen’, to his introspective approach to his period of homelessness on ‘Problems’ and his tumultuous relationship with his father on ‘Timer’. Muzi has a way of intertwining his deepest, most personal vulnerabilities into his music. His authenticity and way of inducing listeners with virtuous stories through insightful lyricism has made Muzi a transcendent storyteller. He’s long dedicated his bodies of work to his family with his 2020 MAMA EP, a memorandum honoring his late mother and 2019 ZENO, an album written for his daughter. His latest project uMUZI follows suit, analyzing his relationship with his late father and own experience with fatherhood. For Muzi, this album is about introspection and growth; the ability to reflect on one’s history and use those lessons as motivation towards a brighter future. Listen now.

Muzi – Milk & Honey / Light

Posted on Sep 15th, 2023

Offering a glimpse into the dynamic, genre-fluid sounds of his upcoming project, ‘Milk & Honey’ and ‘Light’ are a compelling pairing. ‘Milk & Honey’ is soft and earthy, blending The Last Skeptik’s minimalist hip-hop approach with Muzi’s magnetic production. Surrounded by warm synths and muted trumpet melodies, Muzi and The Last Skeptik share their holistic message: “In a world of excess, in the land of milk and honey, I choose less. I choose my introverted nature. I choose myself,” says Muzi.

Its companion, ‘Light’, flaunts Muzi’s spirited house inclinations. Rolling percussion, shiny synths and groovy basslines lay a charismatic backdrop for Muzi’s soulful vocals as he smoothly transitions between English and Zulu. A beautiful dedication to his late mother, ‘Light’ is about commemorates the familial values that have remained with Muzi as he’s transitioned into parenthood. Muzi explains, “‘Light’ is an ode to my mother. Keeping me sane through the darkest times. My light.” Listen now.

Muzi – eMtunzini

Posted on Aug 15th, 2023

The first single from Muzi’s upcoming album uMUZI is beaming with warmth. This is the South African artist’s first project with Fool’s Gold, and it’s apparent that he’s been honing his production chops and vocal abilities for many years now. Nicknamed “The Zulu Skywalker”, Muzi has already been championed by Damon Albarn, Black Coffee, Chris Martin (yes, THAT Chris Martin) and of course A-Trak himself. “eMtunzini” is a vibrant dancefloor jam with lush, layered vocals that invite you (in both English and Zulu!) on a sun soaked car ride down the coast near Muzi’s hometown. An instant daydream. Listen now.

We couldn’t be more excited to announce that South African producer, singer, songwriter, and DJ Muzi has joined the Fool’s Gold family. We were bumping his 2021 album Interblaktic all through the pandemic — an album that was praised for combining aspects of Afrofuturism alongside Afrobeats, hip-hop, kwaito, and 80s electronic music.

Muzi has received press in Spin, Forbes, Vice, and more. With four studio albums since his debut in 2016, Muzi continues to progress sonically with each album, combining his influences and creativity into cohesive projects that have captured the attention of some of the biggest artists in the world. Can’t wait to share his new Fool’s Gold output with the world.
