The Hard LA festival goes down this Saturday (7.19) at the Shrine Expo Center in LA. I spent the whole day at XXXChange’s crib working on a new track for the Kid Sister album, which is coming out crazy. When we finally left we got in the car and I heard this joint on the radio that sounded like Alex’s bassline from “Backyard Betty” with a Cool Kids-ish hook and a rapper that sounded like Young Chris. It’s the new Bathgate song, “Pockets Full Of Money”. I like!
Ever since we first started Fool’s Gold, we always considered Diplo’s Mad Decent to be our brother label in the North American music/DJ scene, and the feeling was mutual. We would constantly brainstorm ideas for ways our two labels could work together, and one of the most fun was a Post-It Note that simply read “MAD FOOLS RAVE IN THE WOODS.” We’re not quite there yet, but we’re getting closer with next Sunday’s (7.20) free Central Park SummerStage show, the first annual “Mad Fools” featuring Santogold, Diplo, A-Trak, Kid Cudi, Mz Streams with DJ Blaqstarr, and surprise guests. This video was sent to me by my buddy Jon Goldstein who’s one of Kanye’s light designers. That’s no small feat… For a long time Kanye’s LDs were like Spinal Tap drummers. He’d go through them like it ain’t no thang. But I digress. Remember my blog about Nigeria? Here’s an airport moment.
I was only back from Europe for 2 weeks when I boarded that cheap charter flight where they fed us President’s Choice TV dinners and headed back to Ye Olde Continent. First stop, Paris. I was booked to play a Vice party with that tall frenchman known as Busy P. Before the gig they had an Ed Banger in-store at Virgin where a special guest was advertised. That was me, I’m special. Hard to keep a surprise when I’m the only guy on Serato, going on stage to make sure they have the turntables plugged right. The Virgin Megastore is really big and it was fun to have an all-ages audience. They had us playing on a mixer that I don’t know and I spent my whole set looking for the “crossfader on” switch, but aside from that it went well!
